The Origin of the Name “Baloch” and Its Current Usage

The name “Baloch” has been interpreted in various ways by historians and scholars, each linking it to different meanings. However, today, we aim to trace the origin of this name within the Balochi language itself.

In ancient times, the region now known as Balochistan was called Gedrosia, which in the Balochi language was referred to as Gedroch. Gedroch was a homeland for the people we now recognize as the Baloch.

At some point in history, the name Gedroch likely transformed into “Bad Roch,” possibly due to invasions by foreigners and the ensuing misery and misfortune of the region. Over time, “Bad Roch” gradually evolved into “Baroch,” with the letter “d” being dropped from the name. Even today, the people of Sindh still use the term “Broch” for these people.

As time passed, “Broch” further morphed into “Baloch,” with the letter “l” replacing “r,” similar to other Balochi words where “l” is sometimes used instead of “r” in different dialects. For example, the word “star” is pronounced both as “Estàr” and “Estàl.”
